Asbestos & Popcorn Ceilings

Posted in: Marlborough Mesa
Hello Neighbors! I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this problem with their ceilings? We started removing our popcorn ceilings, and have since been advised that they probably contain asbestos & are considered a ''serious'' health hazard if not removed by professionals. Today, we dropped off a sample of the popcorn for the labs to test. Has anyone else tried to remove/scrape their ceilings?

asbestos

I dont think they used the stuff in the past 20+ years, but I could be wrong.

I had friends that got jobs removing asbestos from old buildings.. they wore plastic suits and a little mask.... and said that the legislation mandating that removal was the best money maker around.

We did ours....

We did ours 2 years ago. I would be curious to hear your test results.

Negative for Asbestos!

Hello Neighbors, and thanks for your replies. I just wanted to let you know, out test came back negative for asbestos. This really surprised us after the discussions we had with the City of Mesa, the lab, and the environmental abatement teams. But, the lab told us they have houses that were recently built, and they test positive for asbestos, so it doesn't seem to necessarily be related to the age of the house. I claim no expertise in the area, but it might be a good idea to have your ceilings tested if you plan on removing the popcorn texture. Also, according to the lab, the same applies for removing tile/linoleaum and the like. Meanwhile, I will be the one with popcorn texture in my hair, and a giant smile on my face, because we will soon be rid of that ceiling! Have a great day-I'm off to scrape :-)
