Chandler Police Officer Killed in Two- Vehicle Traffic Collision

Chandler, AZ- Chandler Police Officer Robert Nielsen, age 25, a two-year member of the department was killed today in a two-vehicle traffic collision. The collision occurred at 1 :51 PM near the intersection of Chandler BI./ Pennington Dr., which is located just east of Dobson Rd.

Nielsen was driving solo in a fully marked 1999 Ford Crown Victoria police car as he was responding to investigate a traffic accident on Chandler BI./ Price Rd. Nielson's car collided with a 2000 Mitsubishi 4- door sedan that sustained moderate front-end damage. After the initial impact, Nielsen's car collided with a traffic signal pole on the N/W comer of Chandler BI./ Pennington Dr. and burst into flames.

Nielsen was unable to exit his vehicle and he was pronounced as deceased on scene. The driver and sole occupant of the Mitsubishi, a 72-year old female from Tempe sustained moderate chest injuries and was transported by air to a valley hospital in stable condition.

Ofc. Nielsen is survived by his wife, Ann Marie Nielsen and his parents, Berdis and Teresa Nielsen all of Chandler. Photographs of Ofc. Nielsen are available at the front counter of the Chandler Police Department.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is handling the accident investigation and Chandler PD and DPS will release additional information as it becomes available.
