Goodbye Jordan - Hello Frost?

Posted in: Marlborough Mesa

This was a message sent out in an email to our neighborhood, and since then, I have received a few other comments that I will post as well.  For some reason, no one wants to post anything about this subject on here. If you are a parent of children going to either FROST or JORDAN - express your comments here.  If you have not signed up with Neighborhood Link - it takes only a minute.

This was a message sent to me from Pam Reynolds:

Frost parents and families,

I am a mother of a special needs son that attends Jordan Elementary School. The Mesa School District had a meeting last night and another is scheduled on April 22 that will affect both the Frost and Jordan Schools. If you have a child going to either of these schools you may want to attend this meeting and also write the board members.

The decision they will be making at that board meeting is whether to close Jordan Elementary and put about 400 to 500 of those students into Frost. I don't know if you as a Frost parent are apprehensive about the enrollment class size, but this is a concern I would have. They have already had two public hearings at Hendrix and there was only one parent there from Frost. If you care about what is happening, attend this upcoming meeting or at least write an email to the board members.

Here is the web site for Jordan School where you can read the messages and find the times for any further upcoming meetings.

I hope you all know I am a concerned parent and have concern for the Marlborough Mesa neighborhood children.

Pam

We switched our youngest from Frost to a private school because of the overcrowding issue and safety issues. I feel for those parents having to possibly deal with Jordan closing and Frost becoming even more over-crowded than what is has been. I sure hope they see that we need another public school in the area.

Neighbors,

While class size is a concern, adding students to Frost doesn't have to mean larger classes. They have been losing teachers at both schools because of falling enrollment. The music programs at Frost have really taken a turn for the worse because of the small numbers of students. The class size is set by the district and enough teachers would be shifted to Frost to handle the larger student body. The demographics at Frost have also changed dramatically in recent years and the influx from the area around Jordan would be a big plus in my view. It doesn't make sense to pay our tax dollars for two half empty schools and two office staffs, when one school can do the job better and cheaper. I agree that we need to gather information, but we shouldn't panic. I'm sure the Jordan parents will have a bigger problem losing their neighborhood school. Having had 5 children go through Frost, and having done my student teaching there almost 20 years ago I have seen many changes first hand. I think this proposed merger will help breath new life into a school that has been on a down swing for several years now.
