FYI: (This will include us.) The city started getting about 2,510 Beta LEDway streetlight fixtures on May 17 thanks to a $1 million grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. One of the goals of the Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant is to improve energy efficiency in the transportation sector. These new lights will save the city approximately $28,000 per year in electric usage. Mesa chose the LED fixtures because they provide adequate light levels and a 40 percent savings in energy use. They also last longer than traditional lighting and require less maintenance. "These lights look great in residential areas and we are excited to be replacing aging streetlights," Deputy Transportation Director Lenny Hulme said. "It is a win-win situation with residents getting new streetlights and the City saving energy costs." The new lights are being installed across the City from the western edge east to Gilbert Road. The project will focus on residential streets and some collector streets. Right now streetlights are being replaced in the neighborhood south of Broadway Road and west of Dobson Road. The entire project is expected to be completed by November 29, 2010.
