This was sent in an email to those whose emails I have in the neighborhood:

Good Afternoon Neighbors,

Whether these "flashes" of light are coming from a camera or a flashlight – they’re happening here! Two different neighbors and three separate incidents have been reported to me in the last month – two of which came in the last 2 weeks. This is an account from those neighbors:

From neighbor on Plata:

Monday, Oct. 11 - Shortly after 9pm I noticed 3 young men standing on the sidewalk next to my neighbor’s gate - all dressed in black and appeared to be looking through my neighbor’s gate. I got out of my car and asked what they were doing. One mumbled something and I asked again, "What are you doing over there?" He replied that they were waiting for a ride. I said, "I’m asking because it is very unusual to have people just standing around this late at night on the street."

They proceeded to walk slowly around the corner into the cul-de-sac (Wycliff Circle). I stood outside in my walkway observing them. As they proceeded further into the cul-de-sac, I observed occasional beams of light from a flashlight one of the young men was holding. I called Police and reported the incident to them. I never saw the young men leave the area nor did I see them get picked up for "their ride" up until 10 pm.

From neighbors on Peralta:

My neighbor was robbed last night. We were also robbed in March so I believe that perhaps someone is prowling along the canal scoping people's houses out. My wife had seen what seemed like photo flashes outside from the canal … someone may have even been taking pictures of the inside of people’s houses from the canal at night.

I am not sure what we can do, but I have talked with Officer Chad Townley at 480-644-2431 and he is checking on our crime stats and into what can be done. I do believe that he will be talking with Commander Wesselman at 480-644-2018 also. There are probably no laws broken (?) unless/until the people doing this are actually caught. The neighbor on Plata may very well have stopped a crime from being committed because of their diligence.

This also came in from a neighbor on PECOS Avenue:

"This morning I phoned the graffiti hotline and reported the graffiti painted on the fences along Alma School south of Guadalupe.  I had to leave a voice mail but I hope MPD does something about it.  The letters SSM were among the other things painted on the fences on both sides of Alma School.  I'm not sure but I think the Southside Mesa Gang was staking out its territory.  I think we all should be alert especially since strange young men were seen in our neighborhood."

"I think it is important that all of us be concerned and act to keep our neighborhood safe. Last Monday I saw two young white men about 20-25 years old walking on Pecos. I don't believe they live on Pecos. I brought in my green barrel, locked my gate and watched them as they walked toward Alma School. They saw me watching them and they didn't do anything wrong. I just felt uneasy about them. I haven't seen them since. I guess I would like gangs and would-be crooks to know don"t mess with MM. Those people are tough!"
