Our home was burlarized around the end of February, 2014.  The thief broke through our back door and stole several articles which were easy to transport by foot.  The police said that the thief most likely had some kind of bag or back pack in order to be quick.  The officer thinks he came in through our side gate and after being unable to gain entry through the side window, proceeded on towards the back patio area.  When my husband came home he found a small table had been placed in our entry way in front of the door.  It was probably set there as an alert system so the thief could hear someone come in.  

I am curious, do you have a dog? I wonder if that is a deterrent.

I'm sure a dog would be a deterrent, depending on the dog! Even just a dog barking in the backyard would be a deterrent because it is bound to draw attention.

I am so sorry to hear that. I think someone is going around. My husband's work truck and my car were broken into last May and they tried to get into our garage and back gate with a crow bar (the police think). We were both home since it happened at night. We warned all of our neighbors to be vigilent but it is so hard to anticipate a thief. I hope you get some restoration. It is such a violation for someone to enter your home.
