Regular Meeting Minutes
September 4, 2001
Maunawili Valley Neighborhood Park

Meeting called to order at 7:10 p.m. by President Ed Gomes
Present: Jim Corcoran, Rose Faria, Ed Gomes, Suzy Hemmings, Hal McAuthur, Joan Riggs, Linda Ure
Old Business:
Committee Report - Garage Sale: Rose delivered Dick Via's report. The Garage Sale went very well on August 25, 2001. A total of 26 families participated creating revenue of $78.00, of which 25 families were signed up early enough to be included on the map. The ads were placed in three places, purchase of balloons and poster board for a cost of $31.45 (not including xeroxing). There were no complaints received this year. Discussion followed: Suggestion for next year are: possibility of making a community sandwich board to advertise this event, and a possible opportunity to create a craft sale of early Christmas or Community Crafts.
Update on Maunawili and surrounding communities: Jim Corcoran reported 1) the Kaiwai Nui Heritage Foundation is holding its annual meeting to approve the Foundation's Strategic Plan: 2001/2002, September 18th. Of note was that Stakeholder's names were listed to include: Ameron, Le Jardine, Weinberg Foundation, and Castle Medical Center. 2) The hike was held on September 1 and 12 persons plus Bob Hogue were able to visit the site of the Heideman home, a burial heau. The early settlement of Maunawili valley after the original Hawaiians was given by Dr. Paul Brennon, especially the area around what is now Trinity Church and School. The community was able to access the Old Government Road Network to ponds, across dams, to a preserved wooden bridge, the still existing Road to Waimanalo, the Queens Bath, Royal Palms and additional buildings such as the cook's house. Annie Moriyasa, one our community members was able to film the educational reconnaissance The Heideman home has even been a Girl Scout meeting place. We would like to see the Home picked up as the Boettcher Estate was for public preservation. The House needs to be properly protected and restored as an integral part of the history of not only Maunawili Valley, but the royal families of Hawaii. The Conservation Easement, spoken of in the City Council for access to the Windward Regional Park, could include the Heideman House and adjacent buildings and grounds. While the Heideman was originally a Castle home, along with 3 other structures, including the Boyd House, named for the Captain of the Infantry that lived there, and the "Cook House" also known as the "Blue House", all need to be preserved for the archeological site and midden heap surveys. Residents still visit the stream near the Heideman home to collect edible ferns. The MCA must keep the long term objective in mind and include Federal, State, and City & County representatives abreast of our findings from the hike and the study. Linda Ure attained DLNR authorization for the hike which permitted the group to walk on the Old Government Road network as well as adjacent land owned by the State. Dr. Brennon attained authorization to visit sites owned by Weinberg/HRT. An invitation letter was sent to Weinberg/HRT to join the hike. They did not respond. Discussion followed: Ed Gomes will continued to interact with Mr. Dornbush. A cost for continued insurance for association events, on an annual basis will be pursued.
Treasurers Report: 118 homes have paid 2001-2002 annual dues as of August 7, 2001. Balance in account at July 31 was $2,423.64. Expenses in August were the Renewal of Bulk Mailing Permit ($125.00); Mailing and printing of Muse; Flyers for neighboring communities; postage for various letters of invitation and requests, framing of Certificates of Appreciation; purchase of a community drink cooler and rental of Microphone and xeroxing maps for garages sale ($208.99); Garage Sale expenses ($31.45), totaling $365.44. Additions of Dues, Garage Sale fees, and Donations received result in an ending balance of $3,120.20
Report on Maunawili Valley Neighborhood Park - Repairs and Improvements:
The hole in the roof of the pavilion has been repaired and the ceiling lights have been repaired once again. Water damage to the ceiling has been patched. While a clock was installed to turn off the lights at the pavilion, it caused a breaker to trip, so it is being repaired once again. The damaged light meter for a tennis court light (vandalism) will be removed because there is no power to that fixture. The toilets in the women's restroom were repaired and no longer leak across the floor.

Repaving of Auloa Road - we have yet to be notified of the start date of the re-paving of Auloa Road, however, it is in this year's budget cycle.
Water Main Maunawili Road/Loop - The Board of Water Supply (BWS) is to replace the 12" water main under Maunawili Road and Maunawili Loop and install additional fire hydrants on Maunawili Road between Maunawili Park and Maunawili Estates. The design of a water main project in the Maunawili area involves the installation of new water mains, fire hydrants and appurtenances along the street from Auloa Road (at Kalanianaole Highway) , Maunawili Road, Maunawili Loop to Aloha Oe Drive (at the entrance to Maunawili Estates). This project will improve fire protection and water service to the residents in the area. BWS states that they will inform us when they plan to start construction. Question may be addressed to Francis Fung at 527-5203.
Preliminary Capital Improvements Projects - Maunawili area: The preliminary CIP list of the Kailua Neighborhood Board contains Maunawili Dog Park; Maunawili Mini Skate-Board Park; Bus Shelter at Castle Junction (HPU side, Honolulu Bound). Come to the October 4, 2001 KNB meeting to voice your support for these items which will be acted upon during the meeting.
MUSE - Remind residents of 2001-2002 dues for those who have not yet paid. Prepare flyer for Halloween, Wednesday, October 31, 2001 at 5:30 p.m. using the same parade route. Request assistance in donations of cookies to prepare Goodie Bags: Contact Georgette Gomes 262-5265. We are preparing for 100 children. Discussion followed: firm up Christmas Event next month to include Windward Women's Abuse Shelter donation collection.
New Business: 1) 970 Auloa Road property: The property at 970 Auloa Road is not being purchased by the Kailua church-school. It is now listed as realty property. 2) the Lunaai Boys Home has been re-licensed. 3) Quarterly Association Community Functions: It is suggested the community association hold a quarterly community function if possible. Ed Gomes will prepare a quarterly event for next meeting for discussion. The Easter event will be further discussed as time approaches. Christmas caroling may be difficult with timing of calendar. 4) Windward Women's Abuse Shelter - Last year the MCA sponsored trees for the Women's Correctional Institution. It is motioned that the MCA provide canned goods, decorations for the Christmas tree, and specific items needed for the Windward Women's Abuse Shelter this year. Discussion: Specifically requested are lights and ornaments for the shelter's tree. Besides collecting Christmas tree decorations, it is requested that the MCA specifically request from the community: Teddy Bears in Brown or Black for the displaced children; cuddly toys and books, clothing and shoes for adult women and children of all ages; shampoo and conditioner, freezer bags (gallon and quart sizes with zip-lock) for personal items. We will designate a collection place and time (December 8 or 15) at our next meeting. Muse will carry a community request for items for the shelter. Motion carried.
There being no further business, meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
