Here is something I thought you might find of interest! This information comes from the government.
In January, The US government established new federal guidelines for your A/C systems SEER rating. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The goal is to increase energy efficiency and reduce dependency on foreign oil.
What this change means is your current A/C system is now outdated! Your A/C unit has either a 10 or a 12 SEER rating. You can find the SEER rating on the either on inside or outside unit. Manufactures are no longer making parts for units that have less than a 12 SEER rating. So, as replacement parts get used up, there will be no other option than to upgrade your A/C unit to a 13 SEER system. The cost is between $6,000-10,000. In addition, the new 13 SEER unit is twice as large as the current 10 SEER. The average life of an A/C unit in Florida is only 6-7 years!
Hear is the good news. There are companies that provide home warranties to protect homeowners from the significant replacement cost of a new A/C system. Not only do these warranties protect the A/C unit but other mechanical components of your home like appliances, pool equipment, and hot water heater. Cost ranges from $400-700 a year depending on what the warranty covers.
