Mayfair residents may be small in number, but they're big on awards.
For the second year, Mayfair has received the Hillsborough County Neighborhood Recognition Award for the most successful special event by a small subdivision.
Mayfair won the 2006 countywide competition for its "e-mail tree" linking 66 of the community's 92 houses.
The communication system disseminates various information, including critical Neighborhood Watch alerts originating with the Tampa Police Department District 2 station, said coordinator Ann Diller.
"We thought it would be a good way for us to learn who our neighbors are because it's a new subdivision," said Diller, who moved to the Tampa Palms Area 4 neighborhood five years ago when it was one-third developed.
The e-mail tree was helpful in soliciting National Humane Society donations in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, prompting Mayfair residents to provide several vanloads of pet food and supplies. Additional donations benefited human survivors, as well.
The community won the award in 2005 for Taste of Mayfair, an outdoor get-together at which residents shared ethnic foods.
