A Letter from NE Police Commander
Although crime was up by 4 incidents for the period Dec. 1 to Jan. 15 2003 over the same period for the previous year, this holiday letter sent to MIA President Michael Cook from Major Gary D?’Addario, Northeast District Commander for the Baltimore City Police Dept., speaks well for crime enforcement in our district in general. Falling under the category of Mixed Blessing is that our district?’s Drug Unit is number one in the city for search and seizure warrants and number two in gun seizures. Is that good news or bad news?
Dec. 9, 2002
As we near the end of 2002 I?’m writing to share some information about the status of crime in Northeast Baltimore and the achievements of our officers in our crime control efforts.
During 2001, surprisingly, the NE District recorded some of the highest crime numbers in the City. After my assignment to the District, in March 2002, crime patterns were reviewed and a few changes of enforcement strategies were implemented. A foot patrolman was assigned to the 3100 to the 4400 blocks of Belair Rd. Mini-initiatives were instigated on all shifts in various trouble areas of the District and, in May the Department added four additional Patrol Posts to the Day-shift and Four to Twelve shift.
Our primary focus has been to reduce violent crime and control non-violent crime. So far this year our officers have executed approximately 2,100 arrest warrants. Our Drug Unit is in the lead by having executed approximately 400 Search and Seizure Warrants and the Northeastern District is second highest for gun seizures in the city.
Of the nine Police Districts, and during the past nine months, the Northeastern District dropped from number one position in crime totals to the number four position. . . .
Overall, I anticipate ending 2002 with a reduction in total crime of about 16 percent. In conclusion, let me assure you that members of the Northeastern District are committed to fulfilling our Department?’s mission of providing professional law enforcement to our citizens. . . .
Sincerely,
Major Gary D?’Addario

BGE to Repair Power Cable
Mayfield residents who have been wondering what the heck the deal is with all of our blackouts can stop wondering and prepare for another ?— only this time BGE will be nice enough to give us advance warning. BGE plans to repair a faulty underground cable that has been the cause of our frequent power outages in the coming months and will, of course, need to turn off the neighborhood?’s power supply to do so. BGE will notify residents via the mail, so be on the lookout for a postcard from BGE. The company assured residents that the repair would not occur during the cold snap and said it would try to do the work during the day.
NE Police Officer Brian Bowen has said he will step up patrols during our neighborhood during the scheduled power outage as home alarm systems will not function.
