Great American Cleanup

Apr 09, 2001

America?’s largest community improvement program, during April 2001. Hundreds of Gwinnett County volunteers will participate in litter and graffiti removals, tree and flower plantings and much more.

?“We encourage groups to participate in activities which improve the physical appearance of Gwinnett,?” says Connie Wiggins, director of Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful. ?“In doing so, we are showing our ownership and sense of community pride that helps deter vandalism, gangs and criminal activity.?”

The Great American CleanupTM is an easy way for businesses, families, individuals and clubs to make a positive difference in Gwinnett. ?“At Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful, we get calls everyday from people wanting to improve the physical appearance of their neighborhoods,?” says Heather Leo, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Volunteer Coordinator. ?“We hope that this annual event will become one of the most widely known and anticipated activities in the county.?”

Here are five ways you can get involved in the Great American CleanupTM in Gwinnett:

1. ?“Extreme Clean Challenge?” April 21, 9:00 ?– 1:00 p.m.: Illegal dump cleanup throughout the county. We will be cleaning up sites on Satellite Boulevard and McDaniel Park in Duluth. Call GC&B to sign-up to volunteer. All volunteers for this event will receive a Great American Cleanup t-shirt. Please note: no volunteers under the age of 12 for this event.

2. Schools may participate in campus cleanups, athletic shoe collections, and much more. Our annual Environmental Bowl is open to all middle schools. Call Brenda McDaniel, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Education Coordinator, for more information.

3. Celebrate the Great American Cleanup by wearing green on Friday, April 20. Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful will mail green ?“Great American Cleanup?” ribbons (similar to the pink ribbons worn for Breast Cancer Awareness) in quantities of 25 or more for your business, church, civic club, etc.

4. Adopt-a-Road with your family, school or business. Our goal is to sign up 50 Adopt-a-Road groups by the end of April!

5. Conduct litter removal, tree and flower planting, and graffiti removal activities in your neighborhood. We will provide free garbage bags for litter pick-ups.
