MERRY OAKS NEIGHBORHOOD UPDATE

**Urban Cost Share Program—Briar Creek is pilot project
Residents and businesses in the Briar Creek watershed (this includes EVERYONE in our neighborhood) are the first in Mecklenburg County to be offered financial assistance to implement conservation practices on their property, through the Urban Cost Share Program. The program pays 75% of your cost up to $3000 for items such as rain barrels (available from the County) to capture rainwater for watering, compost bins as well as tree planting, riparian buffers and rain gardens. The money can be for materials and contract labor if necessary. Application deadlines are January 7, April 1, July 1 and October 1 2005. Go to www.mecklenburgconservation.com for more information. Click on “here” under urban Cost Share Program on the right hand side of your screen. You don’t have to know exactly what you will do to make an application. You can call Erin Oliverio, Urban Conservationist, at 704 336-2455 and she or another staff member will come out an advise you. They have money that they need to spend on this program, so we hope many Merry Oaks Neighbors take advantage of it. You can also call Jasper at 704 5359765 or Nancy at 704 535 7409. We were both at the informational meeting a few weeks ago.

**Dues increase
At the last meeting, Merry Oaks neighbors voted to increase the dues to $10 per household per year. This money allows us to do the work of improving our neighborhood. Please send $10 dues (checks made out to MONA) to MONA PO Box 18131 Charlotte, NC 28218-0131.

Park and Recreation News

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Dept needs people interested in influencing events and facilities in this Park District to sit on the Central Park District II Council.

The greenway work on the Arnold side slowed for awhile due to some property issues, but these have been resolved. We should see progress there soon with the bridge going in, hopefully sometime in the next few months. In the meantime, go to the end of Masonic and check out the pedestrian/bike path, then down Logie to check out the Roland Avenue extension. If you’re biking, use low gears on the path. It’s steep! Both of these, as well as the greenway, will be landscaped in the spring.
