MONA UPDATE

Compiled by Neighborhood Advocate Nancy Pierce Shaver

April 10, 2005

TWO UPCOMING EVENTS:

Monday April 18 6:30 PM Community meeting to review draft master plan for Merry Oaks Campus Park. Mecklenburg County Park Planner Neil Carroll says: “Good news ! We have a design consultant on board and we have been working with them to develop a draft master plan for the park development project at Merry Oaks School. We would like to move ahead with a community meeting to review the draft and discuss for the completion of a final master plan. We are looking at Monday April 18th at 6:30pm at Merry Oaks Elementary School.”

Sunday, April 17 2 PM Creekwalk. This is a chance to see our neighborhood creek and help keep it clean. The Merry Oaks neighborhood creek stewardship, under Jasper’s dirction, is one of the longest-running creek neighborhood stewardship projects in the County. Be a part of it! Note new time to accommodate those for whom Saturday morning was inconvenient. Jasper says: “We will start at 2 PM at the Central Avenue bridge, walk upstream in the creek and finish around 5 PM at the Charlotte Country Club maintenance area bridge. County EPA, Water Quality Division will provide gloves, bags, grabbers and hip waders. Participants need to wear long pants. We will accept volunteers who want to stay on the creek bank. I need to know beforehand how many people plan to participate.” Contact MONA Creek Steward Jasper Parham at 704 537-9765 or jwparham@bellsouth.net

Saturday, May 7 AIDS WALK CHARLOTTE

Merry Oaks will have a team for this important event on the morning of May 7. To participate as a walker or to pledge money to support our Merry Oaks team, please contact: Heather Crutchfield (hcrutches@yahoo.com) or James Minton (jlminton2@hotmail.com)

A reminder from the creek steward:

This morning I saw a CMUD vacuum truck beside Briar Creek at a manhole. Later I saw the truck along Masonic Drive. I stopped and asked what the problem was. I was informed that a grease blockage had caused the sewer line to overflow. Please do not pour grease down the sewer. Grease should be put in a container and disposed of in the gray can.

Greenway update: We had been told the bridge would go in this spring. It is progressing slowly but surely, but the bridge will not be set until the fall. Two floodplain houses have been removed from Harbinger Court and the property will be part of the greenway.

Neighbor want ad:

HOUSE & DOG SITTING OPPORTUNITY

We are in search of a dog lover (of a sweet, loving dog) who will stay with him in our newly renovated home in Merry Oaks neighborhood, from July 7 until July 26. We will pay you $100 a week. Please email reply to Nancy and she will forward your reply to us. Thank you!

Remind your dog:

It’s spring and everyone wants to get outside with their dogs. We love to see dog walkers, and this is great way to meet your neighbors. But please be respectful and follow the provisions of the City Ordinance regarding dogs:

Ordinance reads that it is unlawful for any person to own or maintain an animal in such a manner to cause a public nuisance. Examples of situations which would constitute a nuisance are:

· Having an animal which disturbs the rights of or threatens the safety of a member of the general public, or interferes with the ordinary use and enjoyment of their property.

· Allowing an animal to damage the property of anyone other than its owner.

· Maintaining animals in an environment of unsanitary conditions which results in offensive odors.

· Allowing or permitting an animal to bark, whine, howl, crow or cackle in an excessive, continuous or untimely fashion so as to interfere with the reasonable use and enjoyment of neighboring premises.

· Failing to confine a female dog in heat.

· Failing to remove feces deposited by a dog on any public street, sidewalk, gutter, park or other publicly owned or private property.

· If you have any questions about a possible nuisance situation, please call the Animal Control Bureau at (704) 336-3786.

For potential home buyers:
