Really?!?
Can any charitable non-profit make similiar noise to remind the community of their existence and the need for donations? - Maybe Oaks Neighbors should do a horn-honking campaign - donate or we go through neighborhoods at kids' bedtime honking horns? - Or maybe a local church should ring their bells at all hours to remind people of their annual fund-raising campaign?
I'm being a little facetious here, but really? that sirens are not even necessary??

I believe it's in the town's bylaws or something... established long, long time ago before any of us were around. It's probably worth looking into to discuss options as things change and it's not necessary for it anymore. Sometimes I feel like NOT donating since the thing goes off at all hours of the day. I'm sure you won't find many people who would be upset for it to be gone... just not the fire company as they are an important part of the community. |

I’ve spoken to a bunch of people about this since my post including a Fire Chief and they have all said the same thing;
(A) The purpose of a fire siren is to advise the public that emergency vehicles will soon be operating on the roadway and to advise the public to use caution. (B) In a town with an all-volunteer force, the main function of the town a siren alerts non-firemen that several people will soon be driving on the road in their own (unmarked) vehicles, and their driving may appear to unreasonable.
Other than that the purpose is mainly historical and traditional. Another fun bit of information I discovered is that none of the surrounding jurisdictions utilize their sirens after 9pm if they even have them anymore.
Either way I respect firefighters for the risks they take and the much needed job they do. Furthermore I believe that our volunteers deserve even more credit since they are donating their time to our community. However I do believe that not a single fire fighter would appreciate it if I blew my horn and woke their children up every time I was called into work. |
