About our association

Mitchell Park West Neighborhood Association

The Mitchell Park West Neighborhood Association (MPWNA) is bounded by University Drive at the north, 13th Street at the south, Roosevelt St at the east and Hardy Drive at the west. There are 275 households in the neighborhood. MPWNA contains Mitchell Park with the City’s only dog-run and the former Mitchell Elementary School facilities, now converted into the new facilities for Childsplay. Mitchell Park East NA, starts at the east side of Roosevelt St.

MPWNA is an informal gathering of all the members in the Mitchell Park West area. It is recognized by the City of Tempe under their Neighborhoods Program and the City provides funding for four mailings per year through their Neighborhood Services Division. Association activities include crime prevention such as Block Watch, advocacy with the City and developers, grant acquisitions for things like trees and benches, community mobilization and neighborhood social events like; street parties, July 4th celebrations, and neighborhood yard sales.

A neighborhood association (NA) is not a home owners association (HOA). An HOA has required dues and ‘codes, covenants and regulations’ (CCR) that are drafted specifically for that organization. An NA is still regulated by city laws and ordinances.

The association has an elected Board to coordinate association activities and act as an interface to the City. Sub-Committees to the Board may be formed for a particular activity. There are currently two sub-committees; one for the Neighborhood Art Festival and the other for the Maryanne Corder Neighborhood Grant.

The MPWNA Board tries to schedule neighborhood meetings every other month and Board meetings every month. The Spring Neighborhood Meeting (March to May) is generally the Annual Meeting at which Board members are nominated and elected. You are always welcome to contact any member of the Board to catch-up on what’s happening, or for other issues.

Unlike an HOA, there are no compulsory dues. However, it is impossible to provide refreshments at meetings or organize area social events without spending some money. All members of the Association are asked to make a voluntary annual donation of $5 per household at the Annual Meeting.
