May 22, 2000

SALEM?—U.S. Rep. Jackie Winters, R-Salem, announced April 13 the availability of a scholarship for individuals entering graduate study for the first time in the fall of 2000.
Four awards of $2,500 each will be given to people pursuing an advanced degree in political science, public administration, public policy or a related field. Sprint Corp., in cooperation with the Women?’s Network of the National Conference of State Legislatures, will provide the funds.

The scholarships will be based on a variety of factors, including scholastic achievements, written statements by the applicant, community/school involvement and letters of recommendation. Applications and supporting documentation are due June 20 and are available through Sprint?’s office at (800) 796-3464.

"The Sprint and NCSL Women?’s Network graduate scholarship presents an outstanding financial leg up for someone beginning the long haul of graduate study," Winters said. "The $2,500 scholarships will help make graduate work and a career in public service a reality for four deserving students.

"Sprint is to be commended for its sponsorship of this effort. Sprint is taking action to enhance the effectiveness and quality of state government, and I congratulate Sprint for its initiative."

Winters is a member of the network. She represents South and West Salem and serves on the Legislative Emergency Board and the House Interim General Government Committee and cochairs the Oregon State Fair Taskforce.
