Montavilla Neighborhood Association

June 2001 Meeting Minutes

General Meeting

The June monthly meeting of the Montavilla Community/Neighborhood Association had many topics for discussion.

Cindi Benson spoke about their annual block party/garage sale taking place on July 8 and 9 at 79th and Glisan. Some of the profits are to be used as a donation to the canine unit at the Southeast Precinct.

An officer from the Southeast Precinct, Teresa Uttke, reported that there is no big news in the neighborhood. They continue to monitor the petty car thefts and break-ins but at present things are pretty quiet.

The Speedy Mart at 79th and NE Glisan is applying for a change of ownership liquor license to be able to sell fortified wine. Rhetta Drennan, our crime prevention specialist, suggested that surrounding neighbors of both the Speedy Mart and Seven Days, the market across the street, enter into a Good Neighbor Agreement with the stores in an attempt to keep the street drinking down and the litter picked up. If you have any questions you can contact Amy Cammack, Liquor Licensing Specialist with the City at 503.823.4519, Kimberly McClain at 503.262.0831 or get together with Rhetta Drennan from Crime Prevention, her number is 503.232.0010 x24.

Kimberly McClain, chair, reported on the change of our monthly meeting place. Beginning on September 10, 2001, we will be meeting at the Montavilla Community Center, on the northeast corner of 82nd and Glisan (Montavilla Park). It was suggested to write a thank you letter to the Extension Office for letting us use their facility for so many years.

A Good Neighbor Agreement was signed with Club Rio, located at 80th and Hawthorne. Club people and participating neighbors were able to come up with some good ideas to keep surrounding residents from being affected by the club. The owners were in agreement with what the neighbors asked and hoped to become an integral part of this community since they have located their businesses here.

Portland Community College is thinking about moving to SE 82nd and Division. Everyone was glad to hear that news.

Lloyd E. Addington submitted a grievance to the Montavilla Community Association about a proposal to give money to some unfortunates from the treasury. In reply to this a subcommittee of three people was formed to address the issues raised in the grievance. They will report back at the next meeting.

We want to encourage neighbors to become involved in National Night Out by having block party. If you are interested in closing off your block for an evening on the second Tuesday in August (the 7th) and having a party you can contact Southeast Uplift at 503.232.0010.

The Montavilla Community/Neighborhood Association meets on the second Monday of the month at the OSU Extension Office, 211 SE 80th.
