The City of Atlanta has a Tree Protection Ordinance

May 23, 2001

Sec. 158-101. Permit to destroy or remove.
(a) Required. No person shall directly or indirectly remove or destroy any tree (dead or alive) having a diameter at breast height (DBH) of six inches or more which is located on property subject to the provisions of this article without obtaining a permit as provided in this section.
Permits may be obtained by calling the city arborist,
Frank Mobley, at 404.330.6874.

It is the homeowner?’s responsibility to obtain the permit, not the tree cutter nor the contractors. Failure to obtain a permit may result in a maximum fine of $1,000 and six months in jail, per tree.
