Mr. Parker,

Thank you for taking such excellent minutes on the community meeting and for forwarding this information to your community. One question that you present that I can answer is in regards to the Guardian Angels. Although they were present at the meeting last night and used the meeting as a pulpit to offer their services, our agency had never been contacted by the Guardian Angels prior to last night's community meeting and specifically prior to the actual offer of assistance that the audience heard as we were hearing it. As you heard, Commander Meza welcomed contact by the group and offered to meet with them after the meeting.

There are a few methods of operation that are employed by the Guardian Angels that I would encourage all citizens to adopt, especially during this period of time.

1. They operate on the buddy system, always at least two Angels walking or driving and are never seen alone. There is safety in numbers.

2. They always have communication devices on their person, cell phones and/or radios that can be used in case of an emergency.

3. They do NOT carry weapons. Statistically speaking, you are much more likely to have your weapon used to injure you by either a family member, acquaintance or stranger than you are to have the opportunity to use it for self-defense purposes. Additionally, with the minimal facts that have been presented...nothing and no suspect seen or heard prior to or before the attacks, weapons would likely not deter this type of crime.

The Guardian Angels observe and report and serve as visible deterrents to many street level crimes, much as Neighborhood Watch groups do (having get togethers in the street or in someone's front yard). They are a reminder to criminals that there are people watching...looking for suspicious activity, and reporting it to the police.

I encourage all of you to continue your vigilance and remember to not only "report every crime, every time" but to report suspicious persons, vehicles and/or activity to the police.

Respectfully,
