Public invited to open house for new City of Mesa Police Chief
The City of Mesa will host an open house for new Police Chief George Gascon on Aug. 10. The public is invited to the Palo Verde Room at the City of Mesa Convention Center to welcome Gascon from 5-7 p.m.
The Mesa City Council unanimously confirmed City Manager Chris Brady's recommended appointment of George Gascon to the position of Police Chief at the July 12 Council meeting. Gascon was chosen after a nationwide search that yielded 44 applications. Gascon will replace acting police chief Gregory Fowler, assuming his new duties on Aug. 7.
"I am excited to welcome Chief Gascon to the City of Mesa. His knowledge and experience will truly be an asset to this organization," said Chris Brady, City Manager.
Gascon has over 27 years of experience with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), where he currently serves as Assistant Chief, Director of the Office of Operations. As Director, Gascon is credited with leading the Department through one of the most substantial crime reduction periods, as well as reengineering Department processes for efficiency.
The Mesa Police Department is comprised of 816 sworn employees and 502 Civilian employees. The Department has several Divisions including, Special Investigations, Patrol Resources, and Criminal Investigations, along with an Air Unit, a Tactical Team, and the Center against Family Violence. In addition, the Department has its own, self contained, accredited crime lab, identification lab and holding facility.
