I wish you all a belated Happy New Year. This is an exciting time for Englewood as Mayor Burns outlined for you in his January message. We are making important decisions about out future, and our vision of what Englewood can become is very important. The CityCenter Englewood development is at the heart of that vision right now. As a community on the move, we will face many opportunities and challenges over the next several months. As a council, we are dedicated to providing our City with the best project possible at CityCenter.
Attracting the desired tenant mix for CityCenter had been a challenging undertaking. Businesses thinking of locating (or relocating) in Englewood must look at many things, including location, demographics, and proximity to other businesses. Many of the businesses we had hoped would locate at CityCenter have not been as receptive as we had expected. At the present time, however, we have an outstanding residential component, a state of the art light rail station, several new restaurants and several smaller tenants that are in the final stages of negotiation. Wal-Mart broke ground in January and should be open in early August. Our hope is that once construction has progressed and it becomes apparent what an exceptional development CityCenter is, other businesses will be anxious to join us, as well.
Other issues the City Council is currently working on are safe, responsible group home; code enforcement; open space and recreation; housing improvements; preserving our neighborhoods; and finding new ways to make home-ownership possible.
