The topic of the May meeting will be the Skerritt House, whose purchase by the City was unanimously approved by the Englewood City Council in March. Ron Miller, Carol Wilber, Cliff Young, and Ann Nabholz will speak about the history and the future of this piece of our heritage. The Skerritt House, once known as "Shadyside", is one of the first houses built in Englewood, and parts of the house date back to 1864. The house, located at 3560 S. Bannock St., was built by Thomas Skerritt, an Irish immigrant who homesteaded much of the area now comprising downtown Englewood. Many of the original documents pertaining to the house, including the 1864 homestead application, have been located, and the Englewood Historical Society will be working with Library and City staff to document the history of the house.
City Councilwoman and Society President-elect Ann Nabholz saw the For Sale sign animmediately brought the house to the attention of a receptive City Council. Her quick action has insured the survival of the house. A range of options for the house are being considered, including converting the house to a museum, or using it for office space or a citizen's center.
