Seeking positive neighbors who will serve as role models, and who will work toward fulfilling the goals of the North Dodge N.A. by encouraging communication and positive collaboration between neighbors.
One of the goals of North Dodge N.A. is to encourage as much neighbor participation as possible. An effective way of achieving that goal is to create a network of street representatives, which are organized by block captains who work with one of four quadrant leaders, which form a team on the NDNA board.
Street Reps
A street rep is a person who lives on that street and has agreed to act as a conduit for information to/from the Association and the people who live on the street. Sometimes they pass out flyers about events. Sometimes they may knock on your door to ask your opinion or let you know about something. They are not there to bother you, so if you prefer not to hear from them, politely let them know.
They are also there if you have something that you want to let the Association or other neighbors know about; for example, burglaries, fires or other crimes.
Phone Tree
We would like to create a street rep phone tree so that all reps can be notified quickly if the need arises to let people know about crime trends or other important information. Here's an example of how that works.
Last week, a neighbor called me looking for her 13-year-old son who is a friend of my son. She wasn't overly concerned as it wasn't too late in the day. However, an hour later she called me in tears - it was dark, he still wasn't home and she had no idea where he was. My husband took off in the car to help her husband look for him. I had a ready list of neighbor's phone #'s, (created years ago by our neighborhood watch group) so I started calling neighbors. I also called the police because of the high number of registered sex offenders in our area. Within 15 minutes my husband found him safe and sound strolling down a nearby street on his scooter.
Another midtown neighborhood assn that already has a working, successful phone tree reminds their neighbors of the function of their street reps, “if you don’t call them, they can’t pass the word along. Keep in Touch!”
Hopefully, more of us will come forward to help make our neighborhood a safer, friendlier and more attractive place to live.
