Niu Valley Community Association

The Neighborhood Security Watch Program (Winter 2004)

Feb 27, 2004

By Kent Tsutsumi, NSW Coordinator

I wanted to take this opportunity to summarize what the Niu Valley NSW coordinators have accomplished since September 2003. The Niu Valley NSW has been organized into nine sections with a coordinator for each. Data for our NSW program is shared with all coordinators to ensure continuity with our efforts. We have updated the block captain and resident participation lists. Based on our updated lists, we procured NSW stickers for our residents which were distributed in November and December. David Cook created a layout map of our NSW street signs and we used that depiction to request new and replacement NSW street signs for the valley. Our contact at HPD has indicated that a reduced number of signs have been approved but no installation date was mentioned.

There were early indicators of interest in starting a Citizens Patrol in the valley; however, that has been set aside due to a marked decrease in interest and lack of sufficient participation in the HPD training.

In 2004, we should see our website activiated so that our newsletter and other information can be distributed more efficiently.

Although our efforts have resulted in decreased crime in the valley, please maintain your vigilance. Crime occurs where there is opportunity. Continue to stay in touch with your immediate neighbors and view all strangers with cautious apprehension. Call 911 to report suspicious activity to the police and also let your block captain / coordinator know about it. This will enable us to relay the information in a timely manner.
