Minutes - for the NorthEast Coalition - March 20, 2008

 

The meeting was called to order by President Claire Green-Fallon at 7:15. No invocation was given.  The President asked each participant to introduce themselves.

 

The minutes from the last meeting were held in abeyance.

 

The President introduced our guest speaker for the evening, Mary Hooper of University City Partners.  Ms. Hooper spoke about what University City Partners are working on.  Some of those items are:

 

A). Creating a vision for University City

B). Advocating for University City's transportation needs

C). Readying for the light rail

D). Focusing on University City's commercial core

E). Spotlighting the importance of UNC Charlotte

F). Capitalizing on opportunities and over coming obstacles to build a prosperous future 

G). Get an urban blvd. study for what will happen on US 29 (fixing the weave)

H). Road network - hope to continue to build

I).  IKEA - get the roads first, then apartments

J).  Asked to be allowed to expand Research Park (Wachovia, TIAA-CREF, IBM, etc.)

K). Digital Optical will bring in top notch jobs

L). Question? Can we become a Research Park again? Have to look at marketing and transportation

M). Master plan for the construction of new library

N). Wal-Mart on JW Clay - sold but not closed, however the bid was 8 million

O). Work with Captain Lester to so some crime tracking for the area

 

The president thanked Ms. Hooper for coming, and for bringing us such valuable information.

 

8:20 P.M.  2nd Meeting

 

Minutes from the last meeting were held in abeyance from the last meeting and approved.

 

Treasurers Report:

The balance in the account is 375.00. The treasurer has applied for a debit card.  Treasurer's report was approved and seconded. The treasurer handed over two bank statements to the secretary for filing.

 

New Business:

-The meeting dates and guest speakers were set for the four months

- April - Members from the police department

- May - Round table

- June - TBA

- July  - TBA

 

Old Business:

- Beacon - Was turned down by City Council

- Jennifer Roberts said the county will accept a park that was proposed if okayed by the developer.

- Dewali - off the books

- Traffic - Once IKEA and Wal-Mart is opened for business, traffic will be a nightmare.

- Cambridge - planner and DOT are has some issues.  They want the road to come out to David Cox Road. The NEC does not.  Cambridge wants their design schedule met. However, it will be deferred for now.

- No 10 wheelers are allowed in the community.

 

No further business, motion to adjourn the meeting of March 20, 2008 at 9:00 P.M.  Seconded.  All approved.  Motion carried.  ALL AYES
