Minutes - for the NorthEast Coalition - September 21, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Claire Green-Fallon at 3:00; followed by the invocation was omitted.

The president introduced the guest speakers for the day, Michael Barnes, city Councilman District 4 and Owens Fhruseth of Mecklenburg Park and Recreation.

The main topic of discussion for Councilman Barnes was I-485. The following was discussed:

a).  Air quality

b). The distance of I-85 and NC77 is 5 miles. Will the allocated money be enough to pay for the roads?

c). The cost to complete I-485 is 200-250 million to date

d). The state could begin buying land for the road in 2009 and start construction in 2011

e). The state would have to find additional funds to complete the project

I-85 is critical to the state's economy

f). The current schedule for construction to start o n the last I-485 segment to begin in 2015. It would likely be finished in 2017 or 2018

g). Lobbying for more police officers

Michael Barnes ended at 4:20 pm.

Owen Fhruseth of Mecklenburg Park and Recreation talked about visions for the future of Mecklenburg county. He spoke about the 2008 Bond referendum for 250 million. The categories are: Conservation and stewardship, Greenways, Neighborhood parks, Community Parks, Regional parks, Recreation and Aquatic facilities and Parks -Athletics and operations.

Mr. Fhruseth finished at 4:50. He thanked the organization for the invitation.

Dempsey Miller - District 99 NC State introduced himself to the audience. His main reason for running for office is to root out crime and see what he can do to prevent crime.

Dan Murrey - County Commission-at-Large

Harold Cogdell - not present but literature was handed out for him

Todd Owens - running for re-election of District Court Judge

October 19, meeting will be held in conjunction with UPAC.  This will be considered a stump and will be held at the University City Y in the pavilion.  Candidates must sign up for speaking time of 3-5 minutes each.

No further business, motion to adjourn the meeting of September 21, 2008 at 5:15 P.M.  Seconded.  All approved.  Motion carried.  ALL AYES
