Articles from the May newsletter

Apr 28, 2006

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

CORRECTION! In the last newsletter I told you the New Braunfels School District would also be holding a Bond election. While that is true, I soon realized that none of our citizens will be affected by that Bond election since our Comal County residents pay taxes in support of the Comal Independent School District (CISD), and CISD will not be holding a Bond election this year.

The ?“Friends of Northern Schertz Parks?” has received wonderful news from the Internal Revenue Service. Their application for charitable status has been awarded, and now, all contributions given to ?“Friends?” are tax deductible. It is no easy task to obtain this status, and we owe great thanks to Duane McCune for all his hard work in preparing and submitting the necessary documents. We already have several businesses who have committed to donating significant sums of money, materials and services. The knowledge that contributions are now tax deductible will hopefully generate more contributions. We are still awaiting approval on the Grant proposal we submitted, but do not expect to hear about that until the end of June. Even if we do not receive approval for the Grant, we will be able to begin work on significant portions of the park improvements by this Fall.

Several concerned parents have requested a crosswalk at the Park. We have discussed the crosswalk with the City, and they are concerned that painting a crosswalk where there is no protection of stop signs may cause children to step off into the street believing they are safe. There could be a greater chance of injury under those circumstances. They are, however, checking into installing ?“Children at Play?” signs in each direction. I will keep you informed.

The HOA is currently in discussions with members of The Fairways at Scenic Hills to determine the feasibility of joining with them to produce this newsletter. We feel that it would be in all of our best interests to form a ?“coalition?” of neighborhoods that would serve all of us in Northern Schertz. The sharing of information and cooperative networking can only benefit our community. By the way, we will need someone to replace the current editor of our newsletter. Please contact a board member if interested.

I recently received a letter from the Area Engineer for TxDot about the results of our meeting on finding solutions to our traffic issues. As you recall, this meeting was held January 31st and the summary was published in the March Newsletter. He basically reaffirmed TxDot?’s commitment as outlined in that Newsletter. We will keep you up to date as we receive information.

Here is an e-mail we are sharing with our readers from a concerned resident on April 5th.

Just thought we'd alert our neighbors to be careful: this morning at 7, my son was accosted at the gas station by a man asking him for money. When my son said he didn't have any, the man took a swing at him. My son hit back, and the man ran away.

This man was a little over 6 ft, Hispanic, and "scruffy" looking. Luckily, my son was able to defend himself, but the next person may fare worse.
Please alert our neighbors to be aware of their surroundings at all times. A deserted gas station in the dark is not the safest place to be.

You may want to pass it on.

Thanks!
