Articles from the January newsletter

Dec 30, 2006

WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Mr. David Harris, the new Schertz Assistant City Manager will be speaking at our January 9th Community Meeting. Please come listen and feel free to ask questions about the direction of our city and plans for our neighborhood.

I recently received a phone call from a resident who informed me that two cars in his neighborhood had been stolen and were found burned at the top of Columbia near the water tower. He suggested we begin publishing police crime statistics to make residents more aware of what is happening in the area. Several other residents have also requested that we again publish them. Because you have requested it, we will accommodate. Beginning next month, I will try to obtain the most up-to-date statistics and summarize them every month in the newsletter.

Several of our neighbors have also requested that the sign board on Chelsea be changed to again say, ?“Welcome to Northcliffe?”. That has now happened.

Enclosed in this newsletter is a HOA membership form with a self-addressed envelope. It is time for our annual membership drive, and we ask that you help us help your neighborhood by paying your $25 voluntary annual fee.

Because of the holidays and all of the activities and obligations that accompany them, this month?’s newsletter will be abbreviated. The members of the Northcliffe HOA Board of Directors wish all of you a very prosperous, safe and HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Debbie Bell

Christmas Lighting Contest

Here are the results of our community Christmas Lighting Contest:

1st Place ?– 5641 Fairway Dr., (see above)
2nd Place ?– 3337 Wimbledon
3rd Place ?– 3325 Harvest

The street showing the most Christmas spirit exhibited by the number of homes decorated on that street was Castle Hill/Sherwin Dr.

FM 1103 ROUTE STUDY MEETING

The TxDot FM 1103 widening project meeting was held to receive citizen input on the best way to widen FM 1103 in the future to meet the projected increase in traffic. 11,000 homes are projected to be built along FM 1103. A Texas Department of Transportation (TxDot) study group presented a plan that includes widening FM 1103 to six lanes and adding bike paths and sidewalks. The project will require acquiring 70 feet of right-of-way along FM 1103 from I-35 to FM 78. The City of Schertz will be responsible for acquiring and paying landowners for the land that is needed to widen the road from I 35 to Chelsea. The project, if approved, would not start for 8 - 10 years, but the City Council will have to decide if the city should purchase the land now or wait until the project is ready to start. Residents in our neighborhood who attend the Baptist Church on FM 1103 have voiced concerns over how the project could affect their plans to add on to the Church in the future if all or part of the 70 feet right-of-way is taken on their side of the road.

WHAT?’S UP AROUND OUR
NEIGHBORHOOD?

WELCOME NEIGHBORS
Susan from ?“Welcome Neighbor?” has agreed to greet new neighbors with a basket of goodies. She has lots of information about the area and coupons from various businesses for FREE. Please contact Duane at (830)609-0906 or Maria (830)606-1130 if you are new to the neighborhood.

DON?’T BLOCK STREETS OR SIDEWALKS
City of Schertz Chief of Police Stephen Starr reminds residents that it is against the law to block sidewalks, streets or any public right-of-way with any obstruction. Residents blocking the sidewalks with their vehicles is becoming an issue. If you pull your vehicle into your driveway and a portion of the vehicle extends past the driveway, you are obstructing the sidewalk and, therefore, breaking the law.

HOT MEALS PROGRAM FOR SENIORS
The Hot Meals Program serves lunches Mondays & Thursdays, 11:45 am, at the Schertz Community Center on Schertz Parkway. Folks arrive early and stay later to play Bingo and Dominoes. The cost is only $2.50. The food is great and the people are nice. They have been serving 30-60 meals on Thursday alone. They provide home deliveries in the immediate area, but if we can find volunteer drivers and enough interest in our area we may be able to get home delivery here too. It would only take about 5-10 orders to justify it. If you are interested in volunteering to drive or feel that you need to have hot meals delivered to your home, call Sally at (830) 625-2496.

BLOCK CAPTAINS NEEDED

We need a homeowner who is willing to deliver the Northcliffe News to 8 homes on Morning/Cherrytree every month, and to several homes on Wimbledon. This is a great job for anyone who likes to take a daily walk. You would just need to leave them in the door. Please call Maria: (830) 606-1130 if you are interested.
