Northern Division Neighborhood Watch

Northern Neighborhood Watch Goes Online

Dec 10, 2003

The Northern Division of the San Diego Police Department has revised their Neighborhood Watch Program. We are going online with our members. Because sharing information between the police and community is faster over the internet, Northern Division is asking all members to give us their email addresses so we can send current information to our members.

As most of San Diegan's know, our city budget has taken quite a hit. Our funds have been cut, which makes us prioritze where we spend our monies. Bringing our Neighborhood Watch program online allows us to cut the cost of mailing and commuicate with our members in a more timely manner. One of our concerns about our program in our division is how effectively we communicate with our members. Communication between the police, its Block Captains and the Neighborhood Watch members is the key to a successful program.

Sgt. Gibbs, of Northern Division, held two meetings with block captains and interested parties outlining the program we are currently developing at Northern. One goal is to increase communication. This means providing information to our online members about current crimes and asking the online members to share this information with their neighbors. We will be providing information about crimes that occur in your neighborhood and asking members to be on alert and provide any tips to us. Another goal for our new program is to increase awareness of what city departments handle what type of problems. This includes, code enforcement, vehicle abatement and other services. Knowing this information will help direct you to the right department to handle your request.

Currently, we are taking some of our most helpful forms we use at Northern and putting them into a file form we can mail out to those who request them. These forms will allow you to complete the information and send back the form to us. We will then respond to the request.

There will be other ways we can use our online communication. Hopefully, we can use this newsletter to tell about our groups successes or how others use the Neighborhood Watch program in their areas.
