What'll it be: TENNIS or HOOPS?

Mar 07, 2001

As a result of the Community Block Grant funding allocated to the Sunrise Recreation and Park District for Westwood Park, plans are underway to complete the park?’s master plan designed almost 25 years ago. The plan calls for installation of a walking path, a covered picnic area and tennis courts. The design reflects the wishes of area residents from 25 years ago for an opportunity to play or learn the sport of tennis. As this plan has been disseminated in recent weeks the question raised by most residents we spoke to was, ?“why don?’t we have basketball courts??”

NNA Secretary, Laura Taylor, raised that question at the February 15th meeting of the Sunrise Recreation and Park Advisory Board. Park officials state that since there would be no environmental impact differing from that of the planned tennis court application, there should be no problem with the change if residents will make this request known. In order for residents to have the Advisory Board consider the change from tennis courts to basketball courts we would need to present signed petitions requesting this change no later than the March 15th board meeting. Subsequent to that, a public hearing would need to be conducted to gain community approval of the revised master plan.

This process may not be easy, but having the sporting attractions that residents of Area One will use is well worth the effort. If you wish to sign the petition, you can visit Postal Express in the Raley?’s shopping center or join us at the next NNA meeting. If you would be interested in circulating petitions and obtaining signatures, please contact the NNA at (916) 723-2642 to obtain a petition and circulation details.
