WESTWOOD PARK - Cellular Tower Concerns

NNA VOICES CONCERNS OVER CELLULAR TOWER IN PARK

At a recent emergency meeting of the Northwest Neighborhood Association’s Board of Directors, the board voted to oppose the installation of an additional cellular transmission tower in Westwood Park based on concerns for our childrens’ safety.

NNA President, John Taylor, presented our concerns at the Sunrise Recreation & Park District’s Advisory Board meeting on Thursday, March 22, 2001. At that meeting, the Advisory Board voted to schedule a public hearing on the matter. A hearing has been scheduled for Thursday, April 19, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. at Rusch Park.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

 Radiofrequency radiation (RFR) has been found to cause a serious impact on public health, especially that of children.

 RFR studies conclude that even short term exposure to low-intensity RFR (like the type emitted from cellular towers) can cause cognitive disorders (attention and memory), changes in molecular structure and DNA (causing cancer and leukemia), and eventually infertility. The effects are cumulative and, because they cause changes in genetic structure (DNA), the effects of RFR can be passed from generation to generation.

 The FCC’s safety regulations do not address RFR which is non-thermal electromagnetic radiation. The FCC’s standards are based on out-dated, 1985 research data dealing specifically with thermal radiation.

 The FCC’s standards do not address Specific Absorption Rates (SARs) which are the real indicator of the RFR health hazards and which intensify with such variables as increase in temperature and water content of the absorbing body.

 There is already one cellular tower installed on the light pole near the scoreboard at the Pony Baseball field in Westwood Park. Our children have been exposed to at least 10 years of RFR already.

 The Park District stands to make $22,000 from the new tower installation with a 5% cost of living increase in rent on the tower each year for the term of the 30 year lease.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

 Attend the NNA’s next meeting on April 3, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. at Round Table Pizza to find out more about cellular tower radiation and let us know how you feel about this issue.

 Attend the Park District’s Public Hearing on April 19, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. at Rusch Park and voice your opposition to the tower installation.

 Log onto the NNA’s website at: www.neighborhoodlink.com/citrusheights/nna. Add your voice to the online discussion on our site. Use the link on the site to e-mail your concerns to the City Council. Use the link on the site to fax your concerns to the Sunrise Recreation & Park District.

 Keep your children at least 200 feet from any cellular tower installation. Do not use your cellular phone when your children are present, unless it is an emergency. Keep your cell phone turned off when not in use to reduce your own exposure to RFR.

 Talk with your neighbors about concerns for cellular tower RFR safety and get involved!
