San Rafael Neighborhood Organization
Meeting Minutes
November 7, 2002
The meeting was held at the Church of God in Christ ?– 25th and Clarkson.
?• Introductions were made by all present.
?• Joe Pollara advised everyone he was resigning as president. Joe cited an increased workload, but more importantly, he and his wife Gwen are expecting a baby. Congratulations Gwen and Joe!
?• Nelson Bock, as the vice president chaired the meeting as the acting president, with a formal election within the board scheduled for January.
?• Pastor Whatley addressed the group and explained that the church (where the meeting was held) would like to construct a new building at the rear of the property, tear down the existing structure, and put in a parking lot at the front of the lot. This would require a curb cut. Doug Reed, the landscape contractor briefly reviewed the plans and offered to be available for any questions 303-282-9622. The church would like to have neighborhood support for the project.
?• Officer Nederhoed and Officer Cortez, our neighborhood police officers, along with two additional officers from Capital Hill presented tips for handling crime in the neighborhood. The officers recommended if we see suspicious activity we should always call. The best defense is for everyone to know their neighbors and to notify the police if they see unusual activity at their neighbors. Additional recommendations were to keep the areas around dumpsters and other areas clear; this enables the police to find someone who may be hiding. The officers stressed that their pager numbers should only be used for non-emergency services, as it may take them several hours before they are able to return the page.

The officers handed out flyers about safety.
?• Paul Brothe thanked everyone for participating on the most recent events: National Night Out, and the First Annual San Rafael Neighborhood Yard Sale. Bonita Bock coordinated the National Night Out, which attracted approximately 60 people to the lovely yard and home of Marla and Leon Graber. The next National Night Out will take place in August 2003. The Yard attracted 26 different households. The neighborhood site at 801 E. 22nd Ave. received donated items from people throughout the neighborhood and earned $234 to offset printing costs for future neighborhood flyers. The event was a fun opportunity to get out and meet the neighbors and for others to see our neighborhood. The event is planned for September 2003.
?• There were no updates from the Uptown Partnership; individuals interested in obtaining the latest information should contact Josh Huber at the Uptown Partner.
?• Nelson explained the board is still investigating zoning issues, historic designation, and neighborhood research.
?• General neighborhood meetings will happen every other month and board meetings will take place in the alternate months.
