PICKERINGTON -- Distinguished businesses and individuals were honored by the Pickerington Area Chamber of Commerce at its annual meeting Saturday at the Hickory Lakes Party House.
Chamber President Marty Nash said Cathy Schafer, administrative manager of PACC, was instrumental in keeping the chamber going in the temporary absence of a president.
In recognition of her hard work, Schafer was given the 2003 PACC Chairman's Award.
"Cathy is being honored for this special award for all the hard work she has done," Nash said. "She kept the chamber going while the chamber was searching for a new president. Since I have been here, Cathy has helped me with the day-to-day operation of PACC."
Debbie Marula received the McGraw Family Athena Award.
Marula has owned Beauty Asylum for the past 11 years. She is a member of the Old Pickerington Business Association, and is involved in the Old Pickerington Downtown revitalization program.
Heitmeyer Homes was honored with the Fairfield National Bank Business of the Year Award.
Dan Heitmeyer began his business in 1986 by building neighborhood decks, and quickly expanded to building new homes. His son joined the business in the mid-1990s and the name was changed to Heitmeyer Homes.
Heitmeyer now has several businesses and is joined by his wife and daughter.
Orum Stair Realtors received the Ricart Automotive New Business of the Year Award.
This award is given to an outstanding business that has operated for less than a year.
Orum Stair Realtors was formed in November 2002 by partnership of Jack Orum and Brad Stair. Both were with other realty companies.
Nash said Orum Stair Realtors quickly became a multi-million property management company.
Former Pickerington police officer Sharon Norris was honored with the Healthfest Chiropractic Safety award.
Norris was part of the city's DARE program since 1999.
Former Pickerington Mayor Louis Postage received the Fairfield Federal Community Service Award.
Postage served the community of Pickerington for 20 years as a member of city council and then as mayor. He became mayor in December 2002 following the resignation of former mayor Randy Hughes. He ran for re-election in November, but was defeated by council member David Shafer.
Postage has been an active member of the community, and plans to be involved with the PACC Economic Development Committee. Postage also served as an assistant football coach at Pickerington High School for 21 years.
Nash said each person who received an award was deserving of recognition.
Nash said he looks forward to serving as president of the chamber, and is pleased to see that more business owners are taking an active role in PACC. He also said he was pleased that many business owners are also involved in the revitalization of Old Pickerington.
In spite of inclement weather and icy conditions, more than 175 people attended the event.
