During the school year Police Officers from the Vancouver Police Department Traffic Unit provide extra enforcement in school zones throughout the City of Vancouver.
School zone enforcement focuses primarily on drivers exceeding the 20 mph speed limits in school zones equipped with flashing lights and school zone signs. The Vancouver Police Traffic Unit utilizes motor officers, unmarked traffic vehicles and the newest unmarked Subaru Legacy during these school zone enforcement efforts.
Additional areas of focus include school zones near high schools during lunch hours when many students leave the campus and speeding near the school often increases.
While extra attention is given to school zones throughout the city during the first two weeks each new school year, the Vancouver Police Traffic Unit continues to provide school zone safety enforcements throughout the entire school year.
Traffic issues such as speeding and pedestrian safety are a top priority, not only for citizens but also for police. The Vancouver Police Department is committed to addressing citizen concerns regarding traffic and working with the community to help solve traffic problems but we need your help. The Vancouver Police traffic unit has a Traffic Complaint Hotline (487-7402) where citizens can leave a recorded message on specific traffic concerns. Ccitizens utilizing the traffic hotline will not only help the traffic division effectively deal with traffic complaints in a timely manner, it will also allow them to analyze the statistics to target high complaint areas which can then be worked on a regular basis. However, in order to keep this system of traffic reporting streamlined and efficient there are a few things that citizens can do to help the process. When calling the hotline citizens should:
* Leave a detailed description of the traffic problem.
* Provide information about the exact the location where the traffic problem occurred.
* Include information about the time of day they noticed the traffic problem.
* Leave their name and a contact phone number (this is an important piece of the problem-solving process).
Traffic officers are assigned traffic complaints that come in on the hotline. The officer begins the problem-solving process by calling the citizen who complained to confirm the problem and also to inform the citizen that enforcement at the location will occur on two separate occasions. The officer notes the time of the enforcements and if any citations were issued.
By having one number that citizens can call to report traffic issues, duplication of services is avoided. In the past, both officers and front-counter staff in all three precincts would frequently receive voicemails or in-person complaints from citizens regarding traffic issues. The Traffic Complaint Hotline (487-7402) provides the traffic unit a centralized location for all traffic complaints. These complaints can then be assigned, tracked, logged and followed-up on in a much more efficient and professional manner. So please, report all traffic complaints through Traffic Complaint Hotline.
