Hanging Up on Telemarketers

Most of you wanted to know how to put a stop to those annoying telemarketer phone calls. Jacqueline Ortiz tells how you can solve the problem by calling one phone number.

"I want to know how to stop those pesky telemarketers."

"Stop telemarketers please."

The government wants to give you the choice now to stop telemarketers from calling.

"What we see is a lot of people who want to avoid the calls and it's a problem," says Howard Beales of the Federal Trade Commission.

Under a new law here in Texas, you can get on a "no call" list. And now the federal government wants to create a nationwide "no call" registry. The Federal Trade Commission will study the idea for a few months. Then it could become law by early next year. Telemarketers who ignore the registry could face an 11-thousand dollar fine for each shower, each dinner and nap that's interrupted.

"It's not my favorite marketing technique I usually try to get rid of them as fast as I can," says Larry Crutsinger.

If the no call list becomes a law. There will be some exceptions to the rule. Charities, political organizations and a few businesses would be exempt from the ban.

We did some checking and found out that there are more than five thousand telemarketers in the El Paso area.

If you would like to get on the Texas no call list it will cost you two dollars and 25 cents. All you have to do call this number 1-866-TX-NOCALL.
