Santa Fe Villas is the result of redevelopment of an old motel that had become the site for murder, prostitution, robbery and other sordid crimes. Currently, the site consists of approximately 150 units Single Residency Occupancy (SRO) for people who are homeless or formerly homeless. There are a large percentage of people with disabilities. The apartment complex is not owned by the government, neither the City of Atlanta nor the federal government. The apartment complex does participate in receiving government subsidies through the City of Atlanta's Section 8 Program via HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development). It is wholly owned by the non-profit, URDC, that re-developed the Pryor Road corridor in southwest Atlanta and various other properties.

History: The Atlanta Time Machine

The Alamo Plaza Hotel Courts were built over the time period when the american car industry and family vacation travel became a national past time. These hotels were built with families in mind so that parents and children had a place to stop and travel and visit the emerging tourist sites and interstate travel. The Atlanta Alamo Plaza Hotel Courts is located along Georgia Highway 19/41 and U.S. 3 routes that took travelers from the cold northern climates of America to the sunshine state of Florida. This was a major stop with freeway entrances and exits built to accommodate the traveling public.

The Atlanta Alamo Plaza Hotel Courts at 2370 Stewart Avenue SW (today Metropolitan Parkway) was built in 1948.. By the 1980's, Stewart Avenue had become one of Atlanta's roughest streets, well-known for the wide range of criminal activity that unfolded in the area. One of the most sensational crimes in this corridor happened at the Alamo Plaza itself. Creative Loafing writer Scott Henry described it this way: "the site of a bizarre double murder in '93 that prompted the renaming of notorious Stewart Avenue. A suburban bachelor party had checked in and hired a hooker, who was tossed out when discovered to be a transvestite. The pimp then shot the groom and best man."

Throughout the years, various renovations were made with more parking being put in place in the front where there used to be a swimming pool and a restaurant. The other locations listed are the sites of the other Alamo Plaza Hotel Courts that were located across the country.
