Livable Centers Initiatives

LCI Program

The issue of "livability" has become a topic of much discussion both locally and nationally in recent years. The challenge of livability is to create communities where we can live, work and feel connected to our neighbors while at the same time experiencing breathtaking growth that sees a lot of the growth concentrated farther and farther from the urban core. In fact, the Atlanta region now has several activity and employment centers that serve similarly as traditional downtown areas.

To help foster greater livability in these activity and employment centers in our region, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) developed the Livable Centers Initiative (LCI).  LCI provides seed money to communities that are working to enhance livability and mobility for their residents.

In May of 1999, ARC adopted polices in the 25-year Regional Transportation Plan that provide $1 million per year for five years for LCI planning grants to regional communities. To back this these planning studies up, ARC also has $350 million available for implementation for the more innovative ideas generated from these plans.
