Presidents Corner
I hope you have been following news on the positive things that are happening in our City. The celebration of San Bernardino?’s GOLD and SILVER medal winner, Derek Parra, in the speed ice skating competition in the Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City, Utah provided our city with national attention. The Seattle Mariners Major League Baseball team came to town and played in our very own downtown baseball stadium, ARROWHEAD CREDIT UNION PARK. A new ?“Dog Park?” opened on March 16th at Wildwood Park, 40th and Waterman Avenue. This is a place you can take your dogs to run, get exercise and spend time with them free of leashes. The downtown revitalization plan has been scaled back and is now moving forward with open water spaces as a cornerstone. A new skateboard park planned for Blair Park is taking shape, and work should begin soon. All of these projects have involved the work of a lot of dedicated people that believe in San Bernardino, to improve our quality of life for generations to come. We also can improve our own neighborhood by working together! Come to our April 25th Perris Hill Neighborhood Association meeting and personally meet our new Police Chief, Garrett Zimmon. After he speaks, we will have an informal time together and refreshments will be served. Evelyn Wilson: Pres.

Graffiti Ordinance
The City of San Bernardino?’s Graffiti Ordinance has been the model for the State of California?’s new Senate Bill #1626, that makes it illegal for those under 18 years old to possess cans of aerosol paint and other graffiti tools, without adult supervision. These ?“tools?” include paint tubes, paint pens, etching tools, shoe polish, and tubes of acrylic and oil paints. A juvenile can be arrested if found to have these items in their possession. If convicted, the ?“tagger?” would have to perform 24 hours of community service and could be made to pay restitution. Graffiti vandalism is a very costly expense to tax- payers and private businesses. In Riverside alone, more than half a million dollars was spent in fiscal year 2000 to 2001 to paint over graffiti. This gives you some idea of what it has cost our city in the past with graffiti vandalism in San Bernardino.

Did You Know?
Free smoke alarms are available to residents of San Bernardino thanks to a donation of $16,000 from the San Manuel Band of Serrano Mission Indians and a $5,000 donation from the San Bernardino Fire- fighters Union. Only 2,000 of the smoke alarms, including batteries are available at no charge. To receive a smoke alarm from the San Bernardino Fire Department, you must stop in at the central fire station, 200 East Third Street and fill out a request form. That form is delivered to the fire station that operates in your jurisdiction. According to Fire Department officials, after your application is processed, the fire station will notify you to pick up your alarm, or arrangements can be made for firefighters to deliver the alarm and install it for you. The San Bernardino fire commission will be looking for ways to fund future giveaways. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that most injuries and deaths related to fires are from smoke inhalation and not burning. This program is not designed to replace the landlord?’s or homeowner?’s responsibility of providing working smoke alarms in homes. For more information call 384-5286. Tell them you heard about the program in the Perris Hill Newsletter!
