Old Dillard Museum

Remembering Our Roots

You are invited to join us on an historical voyage back in time. Explore the rich heritage and influence of the Old Dillard community. Built in 1924, the Old Dillard School, originally called “The Colored School,” is not only the first school constructed for blacks in Broward County, but also is one of the oldest buildings in Fort Lauderdale. In February 1991, the Old Dillard School was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Renovations to the Old Dillard School were made possible through a cooperative effort between the School Board of Broward County, the City of Fort Lauderdale, the Broward County Commission, and the Black Historical Society. Their efforts preserved the school and created a cultural education center known as the Old Dillard Museum.

Exciting Permanent Exhibits/ Museum Hours

Old Dillard Museum occupies the upper floor of the historic school campus, where the former classrooms, library and principal’s office have been converted into engaging and informative exhibition galleries, and a Library Resource Room, which offers a host of ethnic reference materials and books. These interpretive spaces include the permanent Heritage Gallery, with its original chalkboard and wooden classroom desks as well as a wealth of photographers, memorabilia and displays which help to tell the story of early African American life in Broward County. The Minds-On, Hands-On Interactive Gallery acquaints youngsters and adults alike with fascinating African, Caribbean, Native American and local artifacts and activities that celebrate our vibrant and diverse heritage. The Jazz Room houses an extensive permanent educational exhibition, aptly entitled “Jazz: Language of the Soul.” This celebration of America’s original art form pays special tribute to Fort Lauderdale music legend Julian “Cannonball” Adderly (who taught at Dillard High School). The space has become a popular gathering place for intimate live performances in its “night club” ambience. Finally, the Rotating Exhibition Gallery hosts a variety of innovative temporary historic, cultural and artistic displays. Past recent exhibits include “Young, Gifted and Black … and That’s a Fact,” and "Lift Every Voice."

Monday – Friday 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Old Dillard Museum Mission Statement

The Old Dillard Museum exists to promote the proud heritage centered around the first National African-American Landmark in Broward County. We believe is essential to preserve the building and contents, and to provide enriching exhibitions and educational opportunities to keep Black History alive.
