Warren Wooten Named HNS Deputy Director

Warren Wooten is the new deputy director of Housing & Neighborhood Services. He has worked for the city since 2013 and brings more than 20 years of experience in affordable housing, community development and neighborhood stability. He will continue to lead the city's Housing Division while helping advance department-wide priorities.

Evoke Living at Ballantyne Opens with 60 Affordable Homes

Evoke Living at Ballantyne celebrated its grand opening Aug. 6, bringing affordable apartments to an area where high land and housing costs have historically made affordable development difficult. The community was developed on city-owned land with support from the Charlotte Housing Trust Fund and other public and private partners.

Applications Opening Soon for the Community Microgrant

The Community Microgrant program funds resident-led projects between $500-$3,000 that can be implemented within six months, no match required! Projects must align with one or more of the three focus areas: Innovation & Sustainability, Community Health & Wellness, or Neighborhood Engagement & Belonging. Applications will open on September 15, 2026 and will be reviewed on a rolling basis until March 15, 2027 or until funds are fully expended.

Tools like Google Translate and other AI platforms can help bridge language gaps, but they also have limitations. Learn when these tools are useful, when professional language services are a better choice, and how Code Enforcement uses Language Line in the field.

Fall Neighborhood Board Retreat | Apply by Aug. 28

The Fall Neighborhood Board Retreat returns Saturday, Sept. 12, with morning educational sessions followed by an afternoon strategic planning workshop. This fall's theme is Cultivating Thriving Communities.

Morning sessions include:

• Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
• Emerging Neighborhood Leadership
• Modern Neighborhood Communications
• Governance & Bylaw Review

Neighborhood organizations may apply as a group of four to eight participants. Neighborhood leaders may also apply individually for the morning sessions. Space is limited.

Code Enforcement Tip of the Month

Leaves and other yard waste should not be blown into the street.  All yard waste must be bagged in paper bags or open containers and placed at the curb no earlier than the day prior to collection. Grass and weeds over 12 inches violate city ordinances and may result in a $150 fine.
