January 13, 2000
Debbie Driscol of the Neighborhood & Community Assistance Office moderated the meeting.
Debbie reviewed the July 21, 1999, and September 9, 1999, meetings.
The Safety/Crime?Crime Prevention team gave an update:
?•2300 E. Broadway alley has seen a reductin in crime since police are working the alley regularly.
?•3030 Delta has also seen a decrease in illegal activity due to police efforts.
?•Youth activities are not needed during the school year [meaning, provided by the City], only in the summer. This summer, Robson Elementary School is undergoing major construction and will be closed to all activities.
?•There is still some vandalism going on in the neighborhood. The activities are graffiti, cars being egged, and some windows being broken. Activity and frequency are not rising, and incidents seem to be associated with youth boredom.
?•Overall, police say that crime is going down in the area.
?•Mike Leanard reported that they have contacted the City of Mesa and SRP and cannot seem to get anyone to take any action to raise the sagging electrical lines or replace the bending poles holding those lines on South 24th Street. Mike reported that these lines are dangerously low over Edgewood Road. Debbie Driscol agreed to do some research to see if anything can be done.
The Traffic/Road Conditions team gave an update:
?•A stoplight will be installed in May at the Pueblo/Lindsay intersection.
?•The Gilbert and Southern intersection is open after construction and the neighbors are pleased with it.
?•Many speed hump studies have been done. No one is sure if any humps will be installed.
?•Speeding has gone down for the following reasons:
?•Traffic studies
?•Police enforcement
?•Construction finishing and large streets are opening up again
?•Installed speed humps
?•Radar trailer has been visible in the area
The Community Appearance team gave an update:
?•All present loved the clean sweep program. Everyone was able to get rid of his or her junk and trash. They want to do it again. Debbie agreed to send the slean sweep packets outwith these minutes so neighbors can schedule another clean sweep.
?•Code Compliance Officer, Jay Close, reported that he and Cynthia issued nearly 150 notices of code violations and only a handful were still active because most residents complied. Mr. Close shared that one neighbor was upset that he had gotten a notice from Code Compliance, so he drove the nighborhood and found 140 similar violations and faxed them all to Jay and Jay followed up on all of them. Jay Close then introduced Code Compliance Officer Robbie Robinson, as the officer who will continue working in the area on a regular basis.
?•A question was asked about a new code. Jan briefly describe it as an adjustment to the RV code and now trailers and boats have been added to the list. The general rule is that these items cannot be stored in the front yard. If they are over 6 feet tall, they must be behind a screening fence. If they are less than 6 feet tall, no fence is necessary.
The following comment/questions were made in closing:
1. Construction roads need pot holes filled. They route residents through one lane and that lane is full of severe potholes and bumps.
Debbie agreed to pass this information on to the construction office in the city.
2. With these minutes, neighbors would like information on Clean Sweep, The Batteries, Latex Paint, and Tires (BLT) Program, and the Paint Reuse Program.
3. The Robson neighborhood has a website at http://www.neighborhoodlink.com/mesa/robson.
Residents were very pleased that the city came to their neighborhood and held the Commnity Conversatin that was the beginning of their improving their nieghborhood and gettin organized. They felt they learned about programs offered by the city that are available to them.
