SNAPP Minutes
May 19, 2011
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM followed by a moment of silence. All officers were present for roll call, with the exception of Maggie Gerring.
Vice President, Maureen Fisher, gave a report on Legislative issues:
( 1) Weed & Seed Grant has no funds available for the next year.
( 2) State may increase the tax on home owners, be aware.
( 3) City budget cuts. 5/24/11 is the last day for public input for the City Council on the budget issues. Also, Recreation Centers as of today will have no further cuts to hours or Programs for FY 2012. There may be some Saturday hours and an increase in fees.
Sergeant Broderick gave the TPD Report. he addressed the great number of felony arrests made lately. There have been shootings, homicides and drug recoveries. Also some criminal arrests for graffiti in the Cherry Ave NA area. Captain Timpf will be transferred and Captain Ramon Batista will be transferred back to our area. DAC is still in the planning stages and you'll need to let Captain Batista know if you're interested in being a part of DAC.
The March and April minutes were not approved. Once again the SNAPP website was posted on the board. It was decided that three months worth of minutes will need to be approved next month.
There was no Treasures Report, but Maggie did let Joe know that there is no change from last month.
Presidents Report by Joe Miller: please continue to e-mail Joe with round table news before the meetings. Should there be a website committee? The By-Laws Committee now has a copy of the last working copy of by-law proposed up-dates and will meet soon. By-law committee has not meet yet, but Dave did ask if anyone else wanted to be on the By-Law committee, Yolanda Herrera indicated she did; addition is pending the president's approval. Joe also asked for ideas on future agendas and speakers. It was agreed by the majority that we would have a guest speaker from Imagine Greater Tucson at our June meeting.
Plan Tucson's guest speakers discussed the City Of Tucson's General Plan which needs to be updated. Leticia Bermudez, Rebecca Rupp and Maria Coayosso, discussed why the plan needs to be updated and ways to improve the plan. Parts of the plan involve water, open space, energy, housing, jobs, public safety. The plan would promote housing, link water with land use and transportation development standards for streets.
Several SNAPP members recognized and thanked Leticia for all her years of service to NH's.
Neighborhood Round Table :
Maureen Fisher, Cherry Avenue - Stuffed Animal Project, for children whose parent [s] go to jail, is doing well. They delivered more toys to Police. Cherry Ave Seniors have had numerous break-ins to their facility.
Jake Stokes from Enchanted Hills he is no longer the NA president. Karine Aguilar is the N/A 's appointed spokesperson now, and they are still working on graffiti issues.
Mike Taylor from Midvale reported they are working with Tucson Clean & Beautiful and cleaning up parks in their neighborhood.
Margaret Ward, Barrio Kroger Lane, The N/A is continuing work on park improvements and are hopeful to have them completed for Memorial Day use.
Yolanda Herrera , Sunny Side reported on 18th Annual All American Student Awards held May 13th. They have honored over 750 students over the years, one NH honoring students from the Sunnyside Unified School District covering 100 sq. miles. This year the honored graduating students received Education Encouragement awards of $900. ea. She encourages people to attend the El Pueblo Farmer's Market held every Sat. On the second Sat. of each month they will also host local Arts & Crafts artists.
Ernest Patrick, Pueblo Gardens was present and stated things are going as usual.
Les Pierce, Arroyo Chico reported on the feral cat population and what they are doing to solve it.
Maggie Gerring, South Park sent her concerns to Joe who reported on her updates about the Literacy Zone, Costco and a grant to beautify Kino.
David Densmore, Elvira announced the neighborhood had completed a cleanup project along Los Reales near the canal.
Amy Santos, Ward One announced an Urban Farming; Clean Up along Silverlake & Mission Rd and an Energy Conservation Workshop on June 4. June 16th is a farmers market across from El Rio Health Clinic.
SNAPP Secretary, David Densmore, announced once again that the minutes would be posted on the SNAPP website and will be sent , along with link to the web site, to all SNAPP members on the e-mail list to review prior to the next meeting. www.neighborhoodlink/SNAPP
