As we drive down the main street of Fenkell, and thru out the neighborhood, we see many buildings boarded . The grounds are also a mess, You say to yourself why doesn?’t the City do something??? In this article, I?’d like to explore some of the reasons why we see these buildings even tho neighbors have tried very hard to have them removed.
I would like to share 5 properties and their history with you.

** City said in May and Aug. of ?‘03 money not available to remove pile of rubbish .until Oct. ?’03
All commercial buildings have to be tested for asbestos. Do you really think there is the danger of asbestos in a pile of rubble that has been exposed to all the elements for 5 months????

As you drive by you can see this building is full of grafitti and does nothing to enhance our business strip. The answer as to who?’s fault it is because we have these bad buildings in our neighborhood is not an easy one.
**Building&Safety say if a building is boarded it?’s fine even tho City Ordinance Sec.12-11-10.1 states after a year it must be reinspected.
**City Council needs to be more careful about allowing buildings to be with drawn. The report of the Inspector should be listened to.
** Only one deferment should be allowed and after 6 months move forward with demo orders.
**Perhaps they should pay $900 for a deferment and $800 is refundable when the building is rehabbed after 6 months or forfeit towards demolition. We are doing our part, now it?’s time for the City to do theirs. They made the laws now enforce them.?“A property owner only pays $105 or so for a deferment but could make our Community look bad for many years.!!!!?”
