I love my neighborhood. I love an adventure and I love to eat. So, i said to myself, 'Self, why don't you combine all three loves and create a regular restaraunt review?' I agreed with myself and so decided to bring you a few of my adventures of eating in South Tacoma. Bon Appetite...or as we might say in South Tacoma, 'Eat up before it get's cold.'
If you walk around the neighborhoods of South Tacoma at all, you will notice houses that used to be grocery stores. From what I understand, the phrase, "run over to the the store and grab some bread...tell Bob to put it on our account,' was a frequently heard phrase. Sadly, almost all of these places have gone the way of the carrier pigeon. Fortunately, one has been resurrected. But this time it is not as a grocery store, but as a cafe; Ginger's Corner Cafe. Located on the corner of 66th and Ferdinand, this little spot has been many things to the neighborhood from grocery store to diner and now is serving fresh coffee, tea and sandwiches.
The first thing you should know about Ginger's is that it isn't owned or run by Ginger. That would be tough since Ginger is a dog. Laurie, Ginger's owner, does an incredible job with the shop. I've been strolling down to the cafe since its opening and have been fortunate to see the birth not just of a cafe, but as a community gathering spot. I once asked Laurie if she considered putting in a drive-thru to get more customers and she was quick to say, "No, that's not the kind of place I want. I want a place where people can sit, relax and get to know each other." It is that. But let's be honest, you can offer community, but if the food and coffee isn't good, people won't come back. Fortunately, people are coming back. The coffee is fresh, the tea is rich and you really should try the toasted turkey club on a croissant.
If you value good coffee, good tea, good sandwiches or a good neighborhood, then I highly recommend stopping in at Ginger's.
