On Saturday, May 1, 1999, Sandalwood Neighbors in partnership with JaxPride, a coalition for visual enhancement, conducted a neighborhood inventory of visual pollution. The ordinance infractions were grouped by category and forwarded to the responsible agencies.
Reported were:
122 code enforcement problems (trash, maintenance, cars-no tag)
1 incidence of graffitti on an electric pole
5 building & zoning (sign) problems
37 public works problems (graffiti, sidewalk damage, street repair, dead tree, curb damage, sign crooked)
8 street lights out
We should expect to see results in 6-8 weeks from receipt of the letters (by July 20). It may take longer for code enforcement since they have longer lists.
We hope everyone will pitch in and make any necessary improvements to help beautify our neighborhood and make it a more pleasant place to live.
*An inspection of the neighborhood 6-16-99 revealed that the city has already reacted. Fire hydrants have been painted, real estate signs have been removed from easements, sidewalks have been marked with orange paint for repair, two street lights have been fixed, road repairs have been completed, all but one pile of trash has been picked up, graffiti painted over.
