American Creosote Works EPA Update

Aug 16, 2005

Below is a verbatim copy of an email received regarding American Creosote Works:

?“Hello Nancy and Craig,

Yesterday's conference call was very informative. Here's an update on
the ACW site:

A contractor has been secured to repair the extraction system. The work will take approximately 35 days. The system should be running within 60 days.
New monitoring wells will be installed after the extraction system is on-line. (These wells will be locked.)
A public meeting will be scheduled and a fact sheet will be issued to the public prior to the well installations.
Meetings with EPA and Florida Department of Environmental Protection have been held to discuss the RBCA standards and their applicability to various sites in Florida. EPA's decision on which dioxin standard should be used will be shared with the public.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.

Shea Jones, MS, Superfund Remedial Project Manager

We should have great concern about comments Ms. Jones continues to make. While Escambia Treating will be cleaned to meet FDEP standards of 30 parts per trillion (industrial), a loophole in the EPA/FDEP compromise allows American Creosote Works cleanup standards at the much less clean level of 70 parts per trillion (remember, FDEP has required 30 parts per trillion (industrial) statewide, except for us, or so it would seem). Under the circumstances of musical project managers we?’ve endured, the Executive Committee asks each of you to make telephone calls to the offices of Congressman Jeff Miller, 479-1183, Senator Bill Nelson, (850) 942-8415, Senator Mel Martinez, 407-254-2573, and state representative Holly Benson 595-5550, and State Senator Charlie Clarey, 800-439-9092 to demand equal treatment of the creosote superfund site in our neighborhood, since we have not yet sought reparations for properties damaged by EPA, FDEP, Escambia County and City of Pensacola mismanagement. Remember, our neighborhood has never even had the opportunity of a health survey or health study because Escambia County health officials blithely granted EPA?’s health numbers ?“official?” status for Sanders Beach in Escambia County. If you?’d like to send letters, Nancy Neiger can provide examples and addresses.
