ACW EPA Superfund Site Update - February 2005

A brief update includes the following information from Caroline Robinson, ACW Project Manager. Delays at the end of 2004 were caused by end of fiscal year procedures, personnel absences, and information not yet provided by the Army Corps of Engineers. All funds are in place to complete the cap redesign, and she has directed the Corps to use the city and community approved redevelopment concept from 2003. That will include a clay cap under the greenspace park, and matcon at the west end for well access and parking, and also at the south side of Gimbel St. where the city hopes to offer small retail spaces for development. DNAPL extraction, which had been shut down for the greatest part of 2004, are ?“in the process?” of getting up and running again. For us, that means that DNAPLs and creosote will once again be pumped from groundwater headed out to Pensacola Bay. Groundwater sampling results from tests conducted in April 2004 have been received and shared with SBCA and Craig Smith, TAG advisor. Sampling results from October (after Ivan) are pending. Once they have been received and shared with Craig for further analysis he may have some more definitive information for us on how the site and adjacent private properties fared after the hurricane.

Don?’t forget Craig and his co-worker Phil Hardy are compiling numbers from already published test results and locating test sites on an area map. SBCA will identify the address and resident on each place where test results are questionable. Those neighbors will be contacted and asked to participate in the Brownfields Assessment program Craig discussed briefly in October. Nancy continues to work to obtain a supplemental grant for the next 18 months worth of work Craig needs to do for SBCA.
