Board Minutes - January 4, 2005

Highlights of meeting held at Rustic Canyon Recreation Center

Announcements:
-Proposed sewer rate increase. Lisa Mowery and Sam Alavi, from the Los Angeles City Bureau of Sanitation presented background and information on the proposed city sewer rate increase. The City settled a lawsuit filed by Santa Monica Baykeeper and others and the resulting improvements will result in typical monthly sewer charges increasing by $1.75 per month each year for ten years. The written public comment period ends February 1 2005 and the City Council will hold a public hearing on February 2. . In response to a question as to the status of Alejandro Ortiz’ proposal for a storm drain pipeline to beyond the surf line, Ms. Mowery said she would follow up
-Beach House to reopen as Brass Cap. Representative did not appear.

Old Business:
-Canyon gas station. Channel 7 interviewed Mike Deasy and Quentin Fleming.
The LA Cultural Heritage Commission meets tomorrow and will vote on the proposed historical status application. Room 1010 City Hall, 10 am.
-Park Improvement Project, Prop. K. Work has started and is expected to last 4 mos.
-City Council Candidates Forum. The forum is set for February 1, in the gymnasium. The board was reminded to submit questions for the candidates to Quentin at least one week prior to the meeting.
-Setbacks at 643 E. Channel Road. Homeowner Ned Tanen spoke to the board regarding the pending ZA hearing set for January 14 regarding the substandard setbacks at 643. A speculator apparently did some out of code work on this house while Mr. Tanen was in hospital. The new owners are seeking ZA approval in order to remodel and are working with Mr. Tanen to ameliorate impact on his property. He did not request any action from the board.
-Newsletter. The newsletter went out this past week. The new format and graphics were acknowledged positively.
-Membership. The 2004 calendar year ended with 274 paid members.

Other Business:
George presented the weekly crime report from officer Ragsdale. Lucinda Mittleman reported on the breaking and entering of a residence at 701 San Lorenzo, by a homeless woman.

Next meeting: City Council Candidate Forum, February 1.
