For your information. Just received the attached notice regarding beach sand replenishment. As you may know, Mr. Chesler will be briefing the Civic Association Board and interested parties at 7 pm Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Rustic Canyon Rec Center in the Gallery and, I am sure, could answer any questions regarding this project at that time.
Best Regards, George

> As most of you know, the Department of Beaches and Harbors coordinated the
> recent addition of 2,000 cubic yards of new sand fill behind the
> reconstructed rock groin in front of Gladstone's-4-Fish Restaurant and
> parking lot. This was accomplished last May to satisfy a condition of
> approval by the Coastal Commission. We are now poised to complete this
> beach renourishment project by bringing in 20,000 cubic yards of
> additional sand from a private development site in Playa del Rey. As with
> any operation that involves heavy equipment on the beach, there are
> several issues that will affect the beach area near the site. Following
> is a brief summary of how the work is expected to unfold:
>
> * Sand delivery to the beach at the beach north of Gladstone's
> (Castellammare) is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 16th;
> * The project is expected to run during non-peak commute times, Monday
> through Thursday, 10:00am to 3:00pm;
> * This beach area and Parking Lot #5 (between Porto Marina Way and
> Gladstone's) will be closed for public or restaurant use on these work
> days;
> * Barring complications, the work should run for approximately 20
> working days and be completed by Monday, October 7, 2002;
> * Trucks will use Topanga Canyon Blvd. and PCH to get to the site from
> the north in order to minimize traffic impacts at the site;
> * Trucks will exit southbound on PCH near Gladstone's for the return
> trip to Playa del Rey;
> * Sand will be dumped on the parking lot and spread onto the beach
> using Fire Department and Beaches and Harbors' tractors;
> * Our coastal engineer and Department staff will be on site to monitor
> placement of the sand and conformance with all permits and regulations;
> and
> * Department of Fish & Game and Caltrans have given their approval and
> Coastal Commission approval is expected next Tuesday, September 10.

On October 15, upon motion of Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, the LA County Board of Supervisors directed the Beaches and Harbors Department to enforce the County's rights under the permit to deposit the sand and require the developer [Westport Playa Sol, Inc.] to remover all of the material deposited on the beach at the developer's expense.
