Simple Security/Safety Measures Make Great N'Hd

Shanahan Ridge has one of the lowest crime rates in the metropolitan area and most neighbors would love to keep it that way. What simple safety measures can residents take and make for a great neighborhood?

What kind of crimes occur in our area? Primarily, Boulder Police reports reveal that South Boulder issues are "crimes of opportunity". Unlocked cars with CD's, purses, packages, and other items of interest showing. Unlocked ground level townhome windows/doors with stereo, TV, DVD, and computers readily visible. Garage doors left open with the mountain bike, skis, tools, or storage items in view.

All of these items have simple solutions--lock up! Theft events here occur most often during the day on school walking routes. Locking valuables in the trunk out of sight, locking the house doors and windows with expensive personal items positioned out of peeping range do a lot to ward off illegal entry or simple break-ins.

Some other tips offered by safety experts: Keep porch lights lit--bad guys like to work in darkness; Stop mail and newspapers during absences--have a neighbor collect any posted or delivered items immediately; Encourage neighbors to park in your drive, leave a radio on and place lights on timers to make an empty house appear occupied.

Know your neighbors! Offer help to our visitors looking for addresses in the cul-de-sac.... if they are bad guys they'll know that YOU have seen them and their vehicle--this neighborhood cares! Ask for a CITY OF BOULDER sales license WITH PHOTO for any outside youth group member attempting door to door sales. The CITY license provides protection for the young person, as well as the community they sell to.

Providing for a safe neighborhood involves very simple measures and good lock up habits. Shanahan Ridge can continue to avoid targeting by thieves by not "painting the target".
